Industrial Box Thin Clients for 24/7 Operation

    Date:

    https://www.pepperl-fuchs.com/global/en/34439.htm?

Explosive atmospheres, rough conditions, extreme temperatures—process industries pose particular challenges to people and technology. This also applies to the  thin clients that are common in office environments. Unlike applications on conventional PCs, applications on thin clients are not on remote servers. Only image information and input is entered via the network.
Since centralization and virtualization of computers is also a trend for modern process control systems, thin clients have become more important in this field, too. In order to use the technology in process industries, Pepperl+Fuchs developed industrial box thin clients that are suitable for harsh conditions. The BTC12 supplements the existing BTC01 and expands the thin client portfolio.
The BTC12 comes in a robust, enclosed IP4x housing and is designed for 24/7 operation. With its extended temperature range of -20 to +60 °C, the BTC can be installed in extreme temperatures and stowed in cabinets, drawers, or containers. All connectors are mechanically securable so the box thin client can withstand vibration.
A Clear View—from Quad Monitor to Ultra HD
Large screens are not only finding their way into living rooms, but also into control rooms. Pepperl+Fuchs has optimized the BTC12 for use with the latest screen technology. The new version comes with two DisplayPort interfaces that allow the use of Ultra HD monitors with 4K resolution at 60 Hz—this ensures an optimal overview of your processes. Due to the DP++ option, users are able to connect HDMI monitors with a passive DisplayPort adapter.
The well-known BTC01 even supports Quad Monitor installations and can display information on four Full HD screens. Sow with the Pepperl+Fuchs box thin client portfolio, users can adapt monitoring in the control room to their individual needs.
Easy Configuration with RM Shell 5
To simplify not only hardware installation, but also configuration and setup of the box thin clientVisuNet RM Shell 5 firmware is pre-installed and pre-configured for various control systems. So just like thin client-based VisuNet Remote Monitors, the BTC can be put into operation quickly and easily within a few minutes. The latest generation of RM Shell is based on Microsoft® Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB, which is provided with long-term security updates by Microsoft. In addition, RM Shell 5 comes with integrated security mechanisms that give the system reliable protection from malware and virus infiltration.
RM Shell 5 firmware is available for every VisuNet device from Pepperl+Fuchs. It enables a complete thin client solution for process industries—from the BTC in the control room down to the remote monitor in Zone 1/21. And with  VisuNet Control Center software, plant operators can configure, monitor, and efficiently manage all devices from one central point.

GR Series GRP Enclosures for Terminal Boxes and Control Stations—One Enclosure, Numerous Applications

    Date:

    https://www.pepperl-fuchs.com/global/en/34302.htm?

From small stations to large chemical plants: Wherever dangerous process media are used and temperature extremes prevail, Pepperl+Fuchs’ explosion-proof products ensure the protection of personnel and equipment. Our development and production teams are continually improving the portfolio and incorporating feedback from customers and experts. A new enclosure series was developed with the aim of simplifying planning, mounting, and maintenance. Adapted to process industry requirements, this  glass fiber reinforced polyester (GRP) enclosure series is is being rolled out for terminal boxes and control units first. It will be available for all Pepperl+Fuchs products and solutions in the future.

As early as the planning phase for a terminal box or control station in the new GR series, plant designers will benefit from  flexible device configuration. Based on customers’ needs, terminals and switching elements can be individually positioned on the 10 mm mounting rail—without the need for an additional mounting base. Spacers ensure that every single component can be mounted efficiently at different heights. This saves space and helps users incorporate  more functions in one enclosure.
Beyond the planning phase, the new explosion-proof enclosures also offer a broad range of applications: Because the GR series can withstand temperatures of up to -60 °C, it can be used for applications in harsh environments. This makes the latest addition to Pepperl+Fuchs' Electrical Explosion Protection Equipment portfolio a  cost-effective alternative to stainless steel enclosures, which were previously required for such low temperatures.

Mounting and maintenance is remarkably easy: decoupled installation steps allow even large and heavy enclosures to be installed by just one person: First, technicians drill two screws into the wall and mount the enclosure. All remaining screws are then inserted and tightened. This approach makes handling a lot easier, saving time and costs.
Rugged hinge accessories and entry points for screwdrivers make it easier to open the enclosure lid, simplifying maintenance of the explosion-proof terminal boxes or control stations in GR series. Integrated edge protection is another unique feature: This allows enclosures to be stacked safely and prevents damage to the gaskets during maintenance, ensuring that the IP protection remains effective.
Highlights of Terminal Boxes and Control Stations in GR Series
    • Future-proof new enclosure series developed by the experts in electrical explosion protection
    • Flexible configuration reduces planning effort
    • Unique design opens up a wide range of applications
    • Intelligent enclosure series simplifies mounting and maintenance

Pepperl+Fuchs Wins Twice at the German Innovation Award 2018

    Date:

    https://www.pepperl-fuchs.com/global/en/34553.htm?

The Pepperl+Fuchs products SmartRunner Matcher and safePXV/safePGV were chosen as winners in the “Electronic Technologies” category at the German Innovation Award 2018. Established by the German parliament and funded by German industry, the award has been presented by the German Design Council since 1953.

The SmartRunner Matcher took home the first award for Pepperl+Fuchs this year. It is based on SmartRunner technology, a combination of light section technology and a 2-D vision sensor with integrated LEDs. SmartRunner Matcher is used to compare height profiles in automotive production, to name just one example. By comparing saved reference profiles, the product identifies the scanned object and determines whether it is positioned correctly. The SmartRunner evaluates the complex vision data and transforms it into simple digital signals.
safePXV/safePGV positioning systems also received an award. Based on multiple-redundant technology, safePXV allows absolute positioning, and the safePGV enables reliable navigation of automated guided vehicles (AGVs). Both systems achieve SIL 3/PL e with one single sensor. The 2-D read head of the new absolute positioning system reads the color codes of the Data Matrix code tape. Then, the firmware processes the received information based on a safe algorithm in the sensor and forwards it to the safety PLC. For the first time, the same high safety level that could previously only be reached with multiple sensors is now possible with a single sensor.
The German Design Council nominates user-oriented products that stand out for offering added value over existing solutions.

On the Way to Industry 4.0 with 5G—Pepperl+Fuchs is Founding Member of 5G-ACIA

    Date:

    https://www.pepperl-fuchs.com/global/de/34701.htm?

In a world of connected plants and machines that communicate with each other, fast data connections are needed to make such scenarios possible in the first place. The coming 5G mobile communication generation is of critical importance, because present communications standards cannot fulfill the requirements of industrial applications.
To define the standards of this mobile communication generation and ensure suitability for automation, the “5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation” (5G-ACIA) task force was founded on April 3, 2018 at the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturer’s Association ( ZVEI). Pepperl+Fuchs, a manufacturer of industrial automation technology, is also part of this initiative and is working together with 32 other members to prepare 5G for industrial use.
Compared to the previous mobile communication generation, 5G focuses more on “machine-type communication” and the Internet of things to realize wireless Industry 4.0 applications. “With 5G, not only the higher possible bandwidths are important, but also the reduced latency in the millisecond range, which is necessary for mobile applications with demanding real-time requirements,” says Benedikt Rauscher, Head of Global IOT Projects and Industry 4.0 at Pepperl+Fuchs.

Safety Meets Augmented Reality—The New Surge Protection App by Pepperl+Fuchs

    Date:

    https://www.pepperl-fuchs.com/global/en/34607.htm?

Lightning is a natural spectacle, but for unprotected industrial plants it can have devastating consequences. To keep employees safe and avoid costly damage on expensive machines, the M-LB-5000 system provides reliable protection against surges, lightning strikes, and switching operations. To give users a firsthand look at the benefits of these modules, Pepperl+Fuchs has developed an augmented reality app that simulates the modules’ operation in an industrial environment.

M-LB-5000 Surge Protection System: Because Safety is the Top Priority
A lightning strike can cause dangerously high potential differences up to 2 km away from the impact point. To maintain functionality even in an emergency, the 6.2 mm slim surge protection system continuously monitors itself. An integrated traffic light indicator tells users when modules need to be replaced. These status notifications can be integrated via Power Rail into the control level. With a modular design that consists of a base and a removable protection module, the surge protection system can also be easily replaced during operation. For insulation tests and loop checking during operation, you can remove the module and rotate it 180 degrees—the integrated separating function interrupts the signal circuit automatically.
    Prepared for Any Emergency
With the new Surge AR app for Tablets, which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or the App Store, users can simulate how the module reacts during a lightning strike. Three downloadable triggers simulate operation and provide interactive product information. After scanning a trigger, a 360 degree view of the module appears, along with an application menu, key benefits of the M-LB-5000, and a storm button that simulates lightning strikes to test the performance of the module in real time. Users can also replace modules to virtually interrupt a loop for commissioning and simulate signal transmission to the control level in different situations.
Highlights of the AR App for Surge Protection Modules
    • The AR app for Tablets simulates the performance of the new surge protection module in emergencies
    • Plant trigger: simulation of an industrial plant
    • Product trigger: simulation of a 3-D version of the new ML-B-5000
    • Control station trigger: simulation of a control station with error detection
